It’s 1990 at Johnny Brenda’s

This Saturday, July 30, Johnny Brenda’s is going back to 1990 with DJs Emynd & Bo Bliz. Upstairs from 9pm – 2am, the dj duo will be spinning tracks from a year everyone except Arsenio Hall has tried to forget. Where were you in 1990? Can’t remember? Watch some of these videos and I’m sure images of side ponytails and scrunch socks will all come flooding back to you…maybe that’s just me.

For some reason, the only thing consistent about the music in 1990 was that it was so randomly inconsistent. Top videos for the year included Aerosmith’s – Janie’s Got a Gun, Billy Idol’s Cradle of Love, the B-52’s Love Shack, Biz Markie’s Just a Friend, Paula Abdul’s Opposites Attract and Madonna’s Vogue. If that’s not the most random lineup of popular music, then I don’t know what is.

Cheesecake War & Osteria Lunch at Davio’s

Today, Thursday, July 28, is the final day to vote for Davio’s in what I’m calling the Amtrak Series of Cheesecake. Over the past two days, Davio’s has gone head to head with New York City’s ‘Cesca in a Cheesecake Challenge. Each restaurant has given the other its popular dessert to let diners in both cities try for themselves and judge whose is better.

On Tuesday, I got to try both the Vanilla Bean Cheesecake with Blueberry Compote from Davio’s and the Mascarpone Cheesecake with Orange Cream and Orange Brittle from ‘Cesca. Obviously, as a Philly girl, you know who got my vote. You can still decide for yourself, but the voting ends after tonight’s service. So stop in and try the “Cheesecake War Dessert” for $10.

Davio’s is also promoting its Osteria Menu, an ever changing 3-course prix fix menu served Monday – Friday during lunch from 11:30am – 2:30pm for $26 per person. During my lunch, I got to try a Crab and Avocado appetizer, a Panko Crusted Fluke dish with a lobster sauce, and the cheesecake.

Headhouse Square Indie Film Series: Rocky V

Tonight in Headhouse, catch the 2011 Indie Film Series. Tonight’s screening will be Rocky V, when a washed up Rocky takes Tommy Morrison under his wing, only to battle it out in a street fight. Sure it’s not Rocky IV, but its still Rocky.

Tonight, Wednesday, July 27, the film will be introduced by industry pros at 7:30pm at 2nd & Pine. The show begins at 8pm and don’t forget to bring your own chair.

Franklin Mortgage & Investment Nix's Required Reading for the Summer

Back in elementary school, there was nothing worse than a required reading list. If the Chronicles of Narnia haunted anyone else the way it haunted me, you know exactly what I mean. It’s this logic that has The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. revamping its summer cocktail program, giving its “Required Reading” section a much needed vaca.

Instead, The Franklin is expanding its punch bowls, “Because sometimes you need punch in your mouth.”

I agree. Whoever put Narnia on the summer reading list, could have used a crack.
