Rachel Ray on Passyunk Ave?

According to Philebrity, Rachel Ray will be filming a show – The Great Philly Grill-Off, today at 9th and Passyunk. According to the Inky, Patti LaBelle, and Boyz II Men will be there for the taping.

Anyone around to check it out??

Screw T-Bell. Drinker's Has You Covered.

Getting decent Taco Bell in this city is pretty much impossible. And today, on this rare occasion, I’ll admit that’s one thing Jersey has over Philly. But, if it’s way late and the $5 Taco Box commercial is taunting you, head to any of Drinker’s three locations and hit their Late Night Menu.

From 11pm – 1am, Drinker’s Tavern in Old City, Drinker’s Pub in Rittenhouse and Drinker’s West in U-City will be dishing out $1 tacos and $5 quesadillas. They also have $1.50 hotdogs. Though the cheap eats are the bottom dollar value, you can add-on with upgrades costing from $.25 - $2.

Cycling Takes on Policy with Full Frontal Assault

Less than two weeks from today, on September 4, thousands of local cyclists will come together for the third annual Philly Naked Bike Ride.

Its first year, the Ride drew disbelief and confusion as it seemed to many to be more obscure than anything with riders encouraged to BYO message. Riders took stands on environmental issues, gay rights and of course the importance of sharing the road, but a cohesive statement was tough to identify.

uwishunu About the Neighborhood Day at FDR Park

Over the years, FDR Park has played host to many an occasion from weddings to picnics, and even the 1876 Centennial Exposition.

More recently, for local Philadelphians who remember it as a place where they learned to ride bikes on the park’s busted paths, bury their dead hamsters in its patchy fields, and go swimming in its now non-existent pool, FDR is known lovingly as “The Lakes.”

It’s a place for tailgaters, golfers, skateboarders and BMX bikers — and, come September 23-4, the massive POPPED! Music Festival. But on Saturday, September 10, FDR will be a place for neighbors.

The Fairmount Park Conservancy, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Friends of FDR Park and the Growing the Neighborhood project are coming together for the 8th Annual Growing the Neighborhood Volunteer Day at FDR Park, in order to help beautify this historical park.

Those interested in volunteering should arrive by 8 a.m. wearing long pants and closed toe shoes. A light breakfast will be served.

The clean-up is from 8:30–11 a.m., followed by a brief program with Mayor Nutter and other city representatives, in addition to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for FDR’s newest playground.

There will be activities for children throughout the day, including face painting, fire truck tours and fishing; plus, Sweetbox Truck Cupcakes will be on location to sell treats.

Don’t miss this chance to literally lend a helping hand in Philadelphia.

uwishunu About this Family Event to End the Summer

There are more than just trees at the Morris Arboretum; there’s fun for the entire family at this 92-acre horticulture display in Chestnut Hill.

And from August 28–September 5, the Morris Arboretum’s Garden Railway will be closing out its summer season with an ode to the arts, history and fantasy with its “Encore to Circus Week” event series (there was a “Circus Week” earlier this summer, June 26-July 4).

Children will love seeing all of the miniature cities and Victorian homes also known as “painted ladies” along the railroad’s tracks.

On Sunday, September 4, from 1–2 p.m., enjoy an acrobatic act by Erica the Aerialist as well as some fun-filled entertainment by Juggler Dave and Juggler Nick.

The garden railway display is open until Labor Day from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. On Thursday nights, the trains run until 8 p.m.

Insider tip: Morris Arboretum has special “green” rates for admission if you hike or bike there. The entrance is directly across the street from the Wissahickon Trail, making Morris the perfect destination after an afternoon stroll. Green admission is just $7, instead of the normal adult rate of $14.

The Future of Journalism: Craig's List Ad

So.

Apparently, blogging is an unfortunate alternative to the reality of classically trained journalists.

Or is it?

It could be the root to that awe inspiring business model that every big-whig in the world can't figure out.

I seem to have quite the audience of readers, tweeters and followers. I'm sure I'm not alone.

I'd love to keep this moving forward, creating an editorial "co-op" of sorts. It seems to work for farmers and food; why can't it work for writers and information.

I'm building a coop, Know it All Philly.

I'm not worried about competition and such.
Information will flow naturally.
As will advertising revenue.

If you're a writer with a niche and a flow, hit us (aka_me) up - Knowitallphilly (@) gmail.com.

Don't ask me about a pay rate.
We can collaborate; bring your skills to the table, and make something happen.

You're either with it, or your not.

Down-Under Office Piss-Fest

Aside from outer-space and dinosaurs, I could only aspire to be as pissy funny as this Aussie. If you work at a crappy job, where production nummbers that you have mastered are key, check this link. Then keep reading, while laughing out-loud, while nearly pissing yourself, at your boring cubicle.

I forgot that I liked outer space...probably second only to dinosaurs. There's something very awe inspiring looking at these pictures that instantly brought me back to being 9.

This is Your Birthday Song, it Isn't Very Long.

My childhood was about learning my world,
and my teens were about testing it's boundaries.
My twenties were about learning my limits,
and my thirties?

Eating all the cake I can.

Balance.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Second Saturday on the Avenue

This Saturday, August 13, head down to Passyunk Avenue for some great sales, free beers and a Go Go’s tribute band. Many businesses will be participating in the Second Saturday Stroll from 6pm – 10pm, but here are just a few.

The Bottle Shop is offering free samples of Magic Hat from 6pm – 8pm.
Aci Nae is having a buy one get one 50% off end of summer sale.
Metro Men’s Clothing has 50% off their summer apparel too.
Sweet Jane Vintage is celebrating its 1-year anniversary with a 20% off sale and complimentary beverages from 6pm – 10pm.
FUEL is participating with $2 Lattes and Cappuccinos all day.
Fringe Salon has a GoGo’s tribute band lined up and will have snacks, wine and music from 6pm – 10pm.

Affordable Art for the Fiscally Conservative

You know times are tough when the government’s checks are bouncing, but we all play a little game of checkbook roulette at one time or another. In tough economic times, it’s usually the arts and entertainment budgets that get cut first. But one local artist has decided that the prefix “starving” is just not for him and has created a new series of affordable art.

Philadelphia based artist and designer Sean Martorana is selling a series of original watercolor paintings at a price point that would make any fiscally conscious art lover squeal.

“Instead of simply offering prints as a lower-cost product (which many people balk at, because they want something original), I began creating one of a kind originals on 11×17 watercolor paper utilizing watercolors, ink and what ever else is near by,” he said. “They’re quick strokes of inspiration that anyone can afford.”

On Saturday, August 27, stop by the Piazza for Battle of the Canvas, a 10-hour, live art competition where Martorana and 26 other artists will be creating live and selling their art.
For now, these watercolor originals are available online for the low price of just $40.

Rittenhouse Street Café & Outdoor Movie

Getting a sidewalk table on Rittenhouse Square just got simpler. The usually mobbed sidewalks at Rouge, Parc and Devon will be extended into the street on Saturday, August 13, for an Outdoor Café from 11am – 10pm.

With Rittenhouse Square pushing its boundaries, 18th Street between Locust and Walnut will be blocked off to traffic and the local restaurants will be setting up shop. A portion of the proceeds from the day’s event will go to benefit the Friends of Rittenhouse Square. Food and drinks will be served and there will be live music during the afternoon, from 1pm – 5pm.

At 8:30pm, the Square will join in the Outdoor Movie fun that Philly has been basking in during the past few months for a screening of its own.

Bring a blanket or a chair and find a spot near the 18th and Walnut entrance to see M. Night Shyamalan’s Oscar Nominated film, The Sixth Sense, starring Bruce Willis and Haley Hoel Osment.

Prohibition Era Jazz at Little Bar

Philadelphia’s infatuation with all things prohibition has definitely hit an all time high. Speakeasies are the new dive bar and vodka has been ousted by its fruiter cousin, gin. The good old days of raging alcoholism has been replaced with the much cooler, and laid back closet drinking. And I know we’re all looking forward to this fall’s return of Boardwalk Empire.

So while we sip our bootlegger style cocktails, and wait for this season’s AC drama to kick off, there’s at least one prohibition style events that you can attend to pass the time.

Like Prohibition Era Jazz Night, at Little Bar. This Friday, catch the Blackbird Society Orchestra from 8pm – 10pm. This 1920’s jazz/pop/blues band is sure to bring the swing. And Little Bar has the rest - drink specials to be announced.

The old Vesuvio’s is the perfect example of the aforementioned; it seems to have done some soul searching, shed its pool table and sports-bar facade for a swank beatnik feel and some real-deal entertainment.

Little Bar – 8th & Fitzwater.

Prime Rib at The Prime Rib

The words “Prime Rib Night” makes me think of old diner customers fighting over the end slice on a Monday night. But during the month of August, Prime Rib Night just got classed up a notch.

The Prime Rib, one of Philadelphia’s oldest steak spots is opening its doors to the deal seekers of the city and tossing out its civilized stature to offer a $15 Classic Prime Rib dinner special all month long.

Not to be combined with any other offer, of course and only available in Philadelphia.
Rezzies are probably a good idea, but luckily, jackets are not required.

The Prime Rib 1701 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 215-772-1701

PA Dutch-Fest at Reading Terminal Market

The "Lunching Hour" is nearly upon us and if you’re in the vicinity of 12th and Arch, head to the Reading Terminal Market for the Pennsylvania Dutch Festival. Whether you realize it or not, the Dutch are an integral part of the Market, bringing with them some of the best lunchtime items, vintage fashions and age-old tradition.

The Dutch-fest begins today, Thursday, August 11, and runs until Saturday, August 13. So go and get yourself some Smoky Cheesers and you can thank me later.

Compete to Fix Philly's Districts

A computer program called Fix Philly Districts has been made public to our area, giving everyone the tools and information needed to create their own rendition of the city's boundaries.

Azavea, the company behind the program in collaboration with Newsworks, Penn Project for Civic Engagement, Philly.com and The Daily News are calling for participants in a contest to “Fix Philly Districts.”

The contest ends on August 28 and winners will be announced in early September. There are prizes for the winner, provided by the program's sponsors and all of that information is available on the website, fixphillydistricts.com.

The contest began on August 1, and runs until August 31. Three winners will be announced on September 5.

2nd place will receive 50 dozen doughnuts
3rd place will receive 25 dozen doughnuts

Screening Under the Stars: Michael Jackson's This is It

With just weeks to go before September hits, there are only so many chances to catch an outdoor movie, not like there haven’t been about 50 chances to see one this summer in Philadelphia.

On Thursday, August 11, at The Great Plaza on Penns Landing, catch This is It, a backstage look at the preparations for a Michael Jackson’s sold-out London tour. It’s a compilation of interviews, backstage footage and of course music, giving a peek into the final rehearsals of Jackson’s career and life.
When the King of Pop died in 2009, This is It became his final adieu.

The free movie screening, sponsored by NBC10 and B101.1 begin at dusk, around 8:30. B101 will be onsite to host the event, playing games and giving out prizes.

Anyone who’s ever seen a video that I shot and produced knows that I have a sordid love of low-budget web videos. 1. Because I have no budget. And, 2. There’s something about knowing just how low-budget it was that makes it authentic as hell. I also love Philly. For all of its nasty grimy anger inducing parts, it’s a great city and by god, it’s home.

I recently got sent a link to a video called “July,” a promo single from Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies. This video was recorded entirely on an Android phone in and around Philadelphia: pretty much as low budget as it gets. The song is fun. And its feel-good quirkiness is almost as fun as trying to identify the random Philly shots in the video. I'm pretty sure that's the park near Royal Tavern.

They have a kind of kick-starter going to fund their EP’s post-production. That link is here. But if nothing else, check out the video below. It’s worth the 3 minutes of your life.

Drink Philly & Khyber Pass Pub Team Up for Charity

Yes, it really is August 1st and that means August First Friday is upon us. While the battle for the next generation of First Friday continues between Old City and Frankford, the main events are still happening on this side of the Ben Franklin.

On Friday, August 5, Drink Philly will be celebrating its First Friday event's one-year anniversary and they've partnered with Khyber Pass Pub to make this month's shindig charitable, benefitting Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

As usual the event at Drink Philly’s Old City Headquarters is free to attend but donations are encouraged. From 5pm – 9pm, enjoy cocktails, live jazz played by Dan Hanrahan, and an art exhibition featuring local artists.

Philadelphia Distilling will serve up Lemon Moonshine Margaritas and Khyber Pass Pub will be providing the snacks, while supplies last, so get there early. This month, there will be a raffle to win prizes from local businesses and all proceeds will go to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer.

When the party at Drink Philly’s Headquarters winds down, head over to Khyber Pass Pub for the official after-party for discounted Shine Whiskey and Bluecoat Gin cocktails for the night.

Both events are 21+ to attend.

Seinfeld Quizzo at Drinkers West

This Tuesday, August 2, at 8pm, Drinker's West is holding the cult quizzo of all cult quizzos, Seinfeld.

Plus, their August taco has been unveiled, partially. This month's taco is the Mystery Meat Taco: diced potatoes, avocado, feta cheese, thin-sliced red onion, fresh oregano, chipotle cream sauce and mystery meat served chilled in a soft flour tortilla. I say its mutton!
