The 6th Annual East Passyunk Car Show And Street Festival Returns Sunday, July 31 With Shopping, Dining, Live Music And Lots Of Cars

While East Passyunk Avenue has always been synonymous with good shopping and even better food, over the past few years it has staked its claim as host to one of the city’s favorite car shows.

On Sunday, July 31, East Passyunk Avenue will come alive with the sights and sounds of a real deal car show. More than 130 different antique, custom, classic cars, trucks and motorcycles will line Passyunk Avenue from Broad to Dickinson streets during the 6th Annual Car Show and Street Festival.

More than 60 trophies are awarded, including Top 50, Best Stock, Best Modified, Car and Motorcycle Best of Show and 10 specialty trophies.

During the Street Festival there will be live music and DJ’s at every corner as well as vendors selling street food. And Avenue businesses will be open for shopping and dining.

In addition to the brick and mortar businesses, Passyunk Avenue will also be hosting the Bang!Boom!Craft! show during the event. There will be 30+ different craft vendors and artists set up at The Singing Fountain at Passyunk & Tasker, selling handmade items like jewelry, clothing and more.

Antique & Classic Boat Show on Penn’s Landing

Penn’s Landing's Independence Seaport Museum and The Philadelphia Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society are hosting an Antique & Classic Boat Show Saturday, July 23, and Sunday, July 24, from 10am – 5pm on the Delaware River.

Approximately 25 – 30 boats, some described as "floating furniture," from the 1920’s – 1950’s will be on display for free, but access to the museum costs $5.

Music in the Park & Dessert Throw Down

South Philly Food Co-op is breathing new life into Gold Star Park at 6th and Wharton. Its free Thursday Night in Gold Star Park series continues tonight with music in the park and a dessert bake-off, beginning at 7pm. Be sure to bring your own blanket / chair.

The Knife and Fork Band, a six piece neighborhood group, will entertain the crowd.

South Philly Food Co-op is calling for “all you Betty Crockers and pastry-chef wannabes” to bring their favorite crowd-pleasing dessert for the first ever SPFC Dessert Throw Down.
The winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to Fante’s on 9th Street.

Philly Unleashed: Charity Happy Hour at Mac’s Tavern

Mac’s Tavern will be hosting Philly Unleashed, a free happy hour for charity, tonight, Thursday, July 21, from 7pm – 9pm. The event is to support Citizens For a No-Kill Philadelphia and is meant to raise awareness for The Monster Milers, a charity working to connect Philadelphia runners with homeless dogs as volunteer running companions.

Screening Under the Stars: The Social Network

Each week, Penn’s Landing hosts Screenings Under the Stars on the River Stage at the Great Plaza at dusk, or about 8:30pm. Tonight’s film is The Social Network. This Oscar winner chronicles the founding of Facebook and stars Jessie Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake.

Radio station B101 will be hosting the screening and bringing along games and prizes. Don’t forget to bring some snacks, and get there early for a good seat. Maybe bring a pillow to sit on too. The Great Plaza’s concrete construction can get a little tough to sit on after a while.

Headhouse Square Indie Film Series

Tonight in Headhouse, catch the 2011 Indie Film Series. Tonight’s screening will be Night Catches Us. Released in 2010, this film is set in race-torn, 1976 Philadelphia and features a score by The Roots. It’s written and directed by Tanya Hamilton and received nominations at both the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and 2011 Image Awards.

Each Wednesday throughout the summer in Headhouse, guest speakers and industry pros like local film-makers, stylists, makeup artists, directors and producers will introduce the night’s feature film at 7:30pm at 2nd & Pine. Tonight, Wednesday, July 20, the show begins at 8pm and don’t forget to bring your own chair.

Philadelphia has a long running love affair with cool summer treats. The city’s history and love of summer refreshments like ice cream, root beer floats and water ice date back over a century.

To that end, on Wednesday, July 20, from 6–8 p.m., the Philadelphia History Museum will be hosting “Conversations on Cool: The Delicious History of Warm Weather Treats.”

The Food Network’s Marc Summers will host this informative and tasty event featuring panelists from Philly’s chill-inspired industry including the 5th Generation owner of Bassett’s Ice Cream, the 3rd Generation owner of John’s Water Ice and The Franklin Fountain’s founding brothers.

Tastes of the Philly-favorite products will be available, including ice cream from the 150 year old Bassett’s, turn of the century inspired Franklin Fountain, and water ice from John’s which has been a Philadelphia favorite since 1945 and which President Obama recently visited.

There will also be Root Beer Floats, which can be made either with or without Philadelphia’s own ROOT liqueur.

Look & Drink Like Hemmingway at Cuba Libre

Cuba Libre has been pumping out daiquiris all month long. For $10 each, guests are welcomed to enjoy the daiquiri of the day, and each is just as exiting as the next. Thursday, July 21, is a kind of pinnacle in the daiquiri homage, as it is the 112th birthday of one of Cuba’s most famous residents and America’s most famous authors, Earnest Hemmingway.

During happy hour, from 5pm – 7pm, Cuba Libre will be offering Hemmingway’s favorite drink, the Papa Doble for $5.

Chef Guillermo Pernot has also prepared a menu of snacks for $4 each, including Guacamole Cubano, avocado with golden pineapple, fresh lime juice and extra virgin olive oil, served with plantain chips; Frituras de Bacalao, salted cod fritters with homemade lemon mayonnaise; and Miami Frita, a mini Cuban burger of ground beef, pork and chorizo with tomato, lettuce, mojo de ajo and mustard on toasted Cuban bread with Kennebec shoestring potatoes.

Plus, there will be a Hemmingway lookalike contest. So if you look like Hemmingway, you know where to be.

Bistrot La Minette to Cook Corsican Dinner

Though just North of Italy’s Sardinia, Corsica is a mountainous French region known for its rich traditions producing olive oil, wine, citrus fruits and chestnuts. Surrounded on all sides by water, Corsica is also known for its seafood.

On Wednesday, July 27 and Thursday, July 28, Bistrot La Minette will be taking its diners on a culinary expedition to Corsica during its 2011 Tour de France.

Corsica’s close proximity to Italy has influenced not only its inhabitants and language, but its food as well. The four-course menu that Chef Peter Woolsey will create is sure to highlight those similarities.

Dinner is $35 per person or $50 with a wine pairing. The menu is below.

Skillshare Launches in Philadelphia

Before education was moved to the heights and formality of the Ivory Tower, mentors passed their trades onto apprentices and families continued traditions passing down crafts from father to son. It’s this method of organic teaching that has become antiquated over the centuries. But with the help of the Internet, a newly launched company is bringing back an age-old tradition.

Skillshare is an online marketplace for off-line classes connecting those with something to teach with those looking to learn. Skillshare is out to launch a “Learning Revolution,” which is a big part of the company’s educational view. They believe that learning can happen anywhere and should not just revolve around formal training, like in universities.

Now they’re looking to attract teachers and students in the Philadelphia area. Right now, Philadelphia has nearly 200 signups and once Skillshare reaches 500, Philly’s classes will be available.

Web Start Women, a self-proclaimed group of web programming girl geeks, is hosting a networking / discussion / potluck picnic event this Sunday, July 24, at Mario Lanza Park at 7pm.

The July Starluck Picnic event is free to attend, but picnic potluck items are welcomed. During the “Starluck” events, local ladies who are learning web programming or starting a web business brainstorm and talk projects without all the pressures of the male dominated web programmer world.

Web Start Women is a Philadelphia based group offering networking opportunities and very low cost beginner and intermediate classes in coding.

Next Monday’s Photoshop for Web Developers Class will cover the PS tools most used by developers and then converting into code. The classes are two hours long and are $20.

Outdoor Jazz in Brewerytown

As Philadelphia neighborhoods go, Brewerytown is coming into its own with new business openings and neighborhood events. On Tuesday, July 19, at 7pm, Veterans Memorial Park at 31st and Girard will once again play host to a jazz performance.

This time, The Mini Q’s, a jazz funk fusion trio made up of Grammy nominated guitarist, Ben O’Neill, keyboardist, Luke O’Reilly and percussionist Brett Baker.
Keep an eye out for some local food trucks that will also be in attendance.

Bastille Celebrations Continue in Philadelphia

Today is Bastille Day and all around the city Philadelphians will be showing their respect to France on its Independence Day.

Le Bec Fin, Philadelphia’s landmark French restaurant, will host its Annual Sidewalk Festival today, Thursday, July 14, from 11:30am – 9pm. There will be champagne for $7, red or white wine for $6, sweet or savory crepes for $4 and mini pastries for $2.

Inside, Le Bec Fin will be serving a Steak Frites special for $25 per person, including a salad, steak frites and glass of wine during lunch from 11:30am – 2:30pm and dinner from 5:30pm – 9:30pm. There will even be a dj during dinner.

At Bistrot La Minette, another of the city's lauded French bistro's, they will be celebrating their second night of festivities with a four-course Bastille Day French BBQ dinner priced at $35 per person or $50 including a wine pairing. Chef Michel Schulson and his Chef de Cuisine Khamla Vongsakoun have updated Sampan's Asian street food themed menu for the summer. The new menu choices range from $7 - $25. The new cocktails are available by the glass for $8 - $11 or by the carafe for 24 - $30.
